tree2bcrook100-word Flash Fiction. #FridayFictioneers
A story inspired by this photo provided by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.

“Look! A skull in the crook of that tree.”

“Weird. Been there a while, huh?”

“Yeah. Coupla years probably. Anyway, watch for clues. Jimmy’d leave something.”

Word came last spring that Jacob Hatfield was gunning for Jimmy McCoy. Jimmy immediately headed into the mountains until things cooled down.

Strangely, a freak ATV accident took Hatfield in June, but come August, Jimmy still hadn’t returned.

Danny McCoy finally spoke.”Wait! The skull is old, but the horns are new. See?”

“Right! I see. One points in from the east. The other points out to the north.”

“Exactly, brother. Jimmy’s up at Redfern Creek.”

  1. Caerlynn, Clever use of the prompt. Good and well-written story. The long-feuding Hatfields and McCoys have probably furnished material for a lot of books, movies, etc. Well done. 🙂 —Susan
