Grandpa’s secrets

antique-desk100-word Flash Fiction. #FridayFictioneers
A story inspired by this photo provided by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.

Reginald sat at his grandfather’s desk, wondering why Gramps never allowed anyone in his den. He rifled through papers — business papers that meant nothing to him as the will’s executor. Idly, he thumbed through the worn copy of Huckleberry Finn.

Inside the front cover was a note, “Reginald 198.”

Strange.

After pondering a few minutes he flipped to page 198. In the bottom margin, he read, “The sly fox hides the secret.”

“Yep, that sounds like Grandpa,” he muttered.

An hour later, he lifted the painting the “Fox Hunt” painting from the wall.

Damn!

A safe!

Combination?

“Here somewhere!”
